Organic farm walk in Wexford, Cereals and Sheep

As part of the Teagasc Organic Demonstration farms, Thomas Kinsella from Askamore in Wexford showed people around his farm on Wednesday July 11th. Thomas’s farm gained its full organic status with IOA in May 2012. The cereals grown on the farm are oats, winter wheat and a combicrop of spring oats, barley and peas. Thomas also has sheep on the farm.

All cereals grown on the farm are sold off the farm.  The sheep are fed the combicrop and they are particularly fond of the peas! Fertility on the farm is all based on a store of farmyard manure that Thomas has built up. He also has a clover sward in his grassland area. The land is good quality land and even in this testing year the soil has not become waterlogged. The crops are clean and look good considering the poor growth year to date.

Thomas has Dorest sheep which are a hardy breed, they lamb in November and he hopes to have them ready for the lucrative easter market in 2013. There was a good crowd at the farm walk and the sunny south east lived up to its name!
